Caroline A. L. Pratt has officially moved into her new home at the Brooklyn Museum! Approximately the size of a paper clip, Caroline is easily my smallest betta. It will be interesting to see if she grows (maybe she is just a little baby). She is very streamlined and pointy, and -- dare I say it? -- she kind of reminds me of a little squid!
She has really taken to her new digs. Her bowl is like a MASSIVE space for her to swim around in. She seems to be enjoying herself. This morning, she inspected all of her decor. She seems to like the spot between the two plants as a hiding place. She enjoys a few activities I can discern so far: swimming laps, looking at people and stuff, and of course eating food!
All of my office fish are named after Museum Funds, with the exception of Winky (Winkerton 1), my one-eyed betta. There have been Dick S. Ramsay, A. Augustus Healy, and Frank L. Babbott -- and now Carolina A. L. Pratt!
As you can see, Caroline has a white body and pink cheeks! She has maroon fins. She is actually a crowntail betta, which means her fins all have little points on the ends. The last time I got a "fancier" betta, it was kinda expensive ($13), but I think in general females are always cheaper (Caroline was a very economical $4.99).
If you click on the picture it takes you to my Flickr page, and you can see a few more pictures of Caroline.
I think she is a great addition to the office family! :)

IT'S A GIRL!
She is SO CUTE and LITTLE! She is white with reddish/pinkish fins.
I have named her Caroline A. L. Pratt, and she will reside at the Museum with me! :) I will take pictures ASAP.
She is seriously the tiniest betta ever! ♥

What's a fish-parent to do?! Should I keep spelling his name "Millstein," or change it to "Milstein?" Please note, this is only relevant to YOU, my LJ readers, who may hear about Millstein from time to time.
Also. I just configured my Flickr account to correspond to my LiveJournal, so that I may more easily blog with PHOTOS. In fact, I am composing this LJ-post IN Flickr. This is mostly just a test to see how it'll work. I really should use my Flickr account more often. It has such great features such as this one! w00t! Let's see if this thing works...

I said that I wish I could come out and help him measure fish. Then I reported that I was looking at my betta, A. Augustus Healy. Grant said that I could measure him, and explained how.
And so, during my water change of A. Augustus Healy this afternoon, I decided to measure him. As I normally do, I cupped my hand around him (I don't use a net) to scoop him into his fresh bowl. Well, wouldn't you know it, this time, A. Augustus Healy jumped out of my hand?! He landed on the table just beneath my hand, right near the ruler I was going to use to measure him. He laid there very still. I got a very accurate measurement and then quickly got him right back into his bowl.
A. Augustus Healy is 4.4 cm. Now I know! I shall have to measure Owen, Monty, and Millstein! Hopefully they will not have to fall onto the table though!

He is a GREEN (body) and PEACH (fins) betta, and his name is Millstein. Doris thought up that name as a homage to the Millstein Hall of Ocean Life at the Museum of Natural History, which we visited this weekend!
Unlike my antisicial (ailing?) yellow betta that recently passed away, Millstein is EXTREMELY sociable and active, right off the bat. I think he really likes me! He took to his bowl immediately and began swimming around and eating and interacting with me.
Hooray for a new fish!

Anyway, I went home and instead of doing something productive, I just played a game with Alexandra and vegged out. I should have done laundry immediately upon arriving home, and cleaned the bathroom. But -- I didn't! Thursday I'll do it...
By the time I'd gotten home, Susan had completely moved out! I didn't even get to say goodbye!
Tonight is Linda's class. Fortunately, I know she'll be there.
In SAD NEWS, on Monday night my Yellow Betta (yet to be named) died. It was so sudden. He's been so shy and antisocial... It is possible that he never was well. Still -- ! A sad day for bettas.
In SQUID-RELATED news, my first Squid of the Month (from
Marguerite, in turn, really likes A. Augustus Healy. The other day she remarked that she would like to feed him one day in order to "do something nice for him," since he has such an affinity for her.
I am thinking that A. Augustus Healy will have to send Marguerite a valentine on Valentine's Day! ;)

I have many fun activities on the agenda. I'm trying to cram all of the fun in because soon I will be starting school (on the 28th of January -- next Monday). My schedule will be as follows, all required courses:
Monday evenings: Sculpture studio
Tuesday evenings: Writing Across the Curriculum
Wednesday Evenings: Creative Projects (the second half of Linda's class)
Tonight I am going to an event with Aly. Then tomorrow I will look at furniture with Susan and maybe go to a comedy show with Justin at 11. Friday or Saturday I'm going to NJ to visit my folks and Doris... then Doris and I will take a pseudo-road-trip (does it count as a road trip if it is only 40 minutes?) to Connecticut to see Jessica play. Sunday morning will be a brunch with some of my gals from high school. Then -- I will launch into Back to School Mode!
I have lost 2.5 lbs. First mini goal is 10 lbs. Overall longterm goal is 30 lbs. Sounds like a lot? That is how much I have gained since 2004 when I originally lost a lot of my "college weight!" Here is a motivational sea creature-themed tracker:

Last night I did an exercise video tape that was challenging but fun and effective. I just have to get back to my "good habits" of exercising regularly again. As soon as I do, the weight really comes off fast. I've just gotten SO out of the habit!

I just took this video of him. Maybe you can help me think of a name. My other three bettas are named Monty and Owen (home fishes) and A. Augustus Healy (office fish).
To back up a bit, today, I actually slept in till about 10 AM (pretty late for me!). I did some household puttering and then showered and got ready to meet Beth (
Afterwards, I met up with Susan, Bob, Mari, Jay, and Roger at the bowling alley! It was really a lot of fun. I remembered the last time I was at Bowlmor Lanes was the FIRST time I ever met Jay. (Now Mari and Jay are happily married!) We bowled one game (I came in 2nd to last -- oh well!), then we decided to get some food at Chat N' Chew. We all had a really nice time!
In other news, it is COLD as ASS! I am all bundles up... in my living room!

The main problem is that I have all of my in-progress craft projects all over the place. Fortunately the crisis was averted when Susan gave me a thing with three drawers which MAGICALLY fits and stores ALL of my things! (She was getting rid of it!) Yeah!
Lately my clock radio has NOT been waking me up. The reason? For some reason, it only plays AM radio, not FM. I like waking up to music, and I find it really hard to wake up to people talking. It just makes me... fall asleep again! (Which is a bad thing for an alarm clock to do!) Susan told me she uses her phone as her alarm, and offered to trade clock-radios with me -- which we did! So, two problems were solved by just asking Susan. (I learned to do this on the day I bought a lunch box and later found out Susan had 86 lunchboxes that I could've used.)
Our furniture came on Saturday! So exciting! We have a couch and two living room bookcases (plus 1 Susan bedroom bookcase, and one Alexandra bed and mattress!). It was a big day for our apartment! :)
Sunday was spent mostly doing drawing schoolwork. I like my drawing this week (it is another in-progress one -- a portrait of Megan knitting on the train!). Hopefully it will go over well with my professor and my classmates too.
I have FISH in my LIVING ROOM! Bettas Owen and Monty are chillin' in one of the bookcases. They look so cute. Having fish around makes me happy!
I got "Brain Age" in the mail today from Amazon. YES! So cool. I have not played it yet, but will maybe check it out on the train on the way to school tonight! I also got these little flat cases that hold 3 DS games, so I can more safely tote my games around with me! w00t!

I just officially joined YouTube. I joined so I can post videos. Hopefully there will be more videos in the future. Until then, I hope you enjoy the last video I posted, "Shimmering Shape - The Sequel." Maybe Doris can post "Shimmering Shape - Part 1" sometime. :)

I am continuing my EXTREME-CLEAN. I decided to go one area at a time and do a very thorough job. Yesterday I cleaned out my entire Nook. (The "L" shaped part of my bedroom where my desk is located.) I am going to go around to the different areas of the room until all is clean. Then, later I will do more in-depth cleaning projects like: my desk drawers, inside my closet, and re-organizing the tubs under my bed (they have crafts stuff in them). But right now I am concerned with just having everything very neat and tidy on the surface and I'll do the detailed stuff later!

Shortly after the death of Paul5/Elvis2, his brother Elijah Blu (belived blue betta) passed away. Eli had been ailing, and Susan and I were just about to leave for St. Simons Island. We had a friend coming to our apartment 1 or 2 times while we were gone to feed the fish, water the plants, and take care of Susan's rats. We were afraid Eli would up and die and then become gross before our friend came, and then he'd have to deal with our dead fish and feel all bad about it. So, for the first time ever, I allowed Susan to do a "premature flush." I left the house to do an errand, and when I returned... Eli just wasn't there anymore.

I gor a new blue gourami for my tank to keep my orange gourami, Claude, company. His name is Jean-Marc, and I hope he will outlive the blue gouramis before him (Jean-Luc and Guillome). Jean-Marc is living peacefully in my room in a 5-gallon aquarium with the small, albino catfish, Dr. Spitzer.

When we were in St. Simons, I was determined to find a sand dollar and show Susan what they looked like when they were alive and not dead and bleached out for tourists to buy. When I was little I used to think they were like a sea-shell; a non-living thing. But when I found out that the actual sand dollar itself was an organism, I refused to take them out of the water and kill them. They are nicer to look at when they are alive!

There is a manatee in Manhattan! It has come to look for me!

Paul5/Elvis2
Dec. 4, 2004-July 11, 2006
The following is my submission to "Pet of the Day" in hopes of getting P5/E2 on there. He never made it during his lifetime! :-(
( The Story of Paul5/Elvis2. )
He will be remembered with love and fondness always as me and Susan's first pet together. He will be missed!
I have to say, though -- I am glad he went before us prior to our move, because he had been ailing for a while, and I feared the big move might be too stressful for him. Sadly, I think his companion, Elijah Blu, is not far behind him... :-(
It is a sad day for sea-creatures! Rest in Peace, Paul5/Elvis2!
I like a boy! ♥!
I'm going to move and it is going to be cool. Apartment hunt. Tally ho!
I will miss being around the corner from the Country Club.
I have conceived of another custom-made crocheted invention. It's a caddy. For guitar-picks. A guitar-pick-caddy, if you will. Must experiment.
Banana ice pops are the shizzz.
Susan thought our fish Paul5 had died, but really he's just been swimming upside-down for months.
I am super-excited about sleeping in my-own-bed!
Here I go! Wheeeee!

Post-interview: blimp sighting, hovering over Brooklyn.
Someone-new (smart!creative!attrrrractive!) to be excited about.
My cupcakes, being the "hit" of the party.
The re-planting and re-growth of seeds.
My first female betta!
So: I felt good about how it went. I was told a decision would be made by now... so far, no announcement has been made... I feel badly for those who have said they;d keep their fingers crossed for me... since last week... sorry if anyone's fingers become twisted and arthritic. Maybe we should all switch to knocking on wood, for the greater good of our fingers (but to the dismay of our knuckles).
