So I don't want my 3-Day write-ups to go on too long and sporadic, so I will write up the third day (so as not to keep you hanging!).

SATURDAY
On Saturday morning, we arose bright and early and ate a nice, hot breakfast of eggs, bacon, biscuit, and oatmeal. We donned our matching pink tank-top-style wicking shirts because we'd heard that Saturday would be the hottest day of our walk, and this was our "coolest" shirt. It was in fact our hottest day, peaking at 83 degrees -- not bad!

To start this entry off right, I must extend a hearty THANK YOU to Susan's parents, Ron and Sally, who not only helped us move into our new apartment, but they stayed and took us up to Boston on Thursday!
We packed up our suitcases and departed for Boston at 12 PM. The traffic in the city was such that we only moved 19 miles in 1.5 hours (I believe it might've been Ron who commented, "You'll be walking more than that in one day!"). Still, we made it to Boston eventually, checked in to our hotel, ate some dinner, then went to WalMart for some supplies (we needed to get some water bottles, some breakfast food for the following morning, and a mini-alarm clock).
Back at the hotel, we went to bed early, because we had to be at the Opening Ceremonies between 5:30 AM and 6 AM.

With the walk just days away, we wanted to again THANK YOU to all who have supported us all along with good thoughts, encouragement, generous donations, and support! We are proud to have such an amazing network of family and friends who have helped us gear up for this big challenge! As the big day approaches, we thought we'd send one final newsletter to tell you about the last-minute preparations we've made to get ready for the walk!
+++
Training Like Crazy!
We visited St. Simons Island, GA (where many of Allison's relatives reside) a couple of weeks ago for some sun and fun. However, we did not want to neglect our training, so we embarked on a 16-mile walk in 95-degree weather, 75% humidity!! We did all of the things that we were training to do -- to hydrate frequently using both sports drinks and water, to apply sunscreen liberally and often, to break for bathrooms whenever possible, to eat small snacks frequently, and to stretch. It was really intense, especially in areas that were not in the shade, but it made us feel like if we could do it in that extreme heat, we could do anything!!
+++
Packing Update!
On our journey, we will be bringing:
* 2 sleeping bags
* 2 fanny packs
* 12 pairs of anti-blister socks
* 4 pairs of sneakers
* 6 shirts made to "wick" away sweat
* 6 pairs of shorts/capris
* Body Glide (a product to protect against blisters and chafing)
* powder
* mini packs of toilet paper (hey, you never know if those Port-o-potties run out!!)
* SUNSCREEN!!
* water bottles
* Pink Flamingoes mascot (thanks again, Dolly!)
* Plastic Flamingo lawn ornaments (to use as a tent marker!)
* Cortisone cream (alas, Susan and Allison are prone to heat rash...)
* bug spray
* 2 ponchos (in case of rain)
* assorted "first aid" items
* flashlight (to find the Port-o-potty at night)
The 3-Day staff provide the 2-person tent we will be sharing, and meals, snacks, and drinks are provided!

, So I haven't really told you about my life in a while, so I thought I'd do that quickly.
I will be out of town for the next 10 days! Susan and I are going to St. Simons Island, GA! We will visit my fam and bask on the beach... and we will be beautifully tanned by the time we return (hopefully not sunburnt!) - just in time for our big move! I am excited!
Last Sunday, Susan and I walked 18 miles in preparation for our WALKATHON! We walked from our apartment to where our new apartment will be (we walked past ours and Andrew's new apartment -- which is a mere 2 blocks away!)... then we walked to the Brooklyn Bridge, crossed it into Manhattan, then went to the Williamsburg Bridge and went back home. It took about 9 hours (which includes water/Gatorade-buying breaks, potty stops, and a lunch break), but it was very empowering! I felt all we-can-do-this!
Help me out and repost this link... I've still got some more fund-raising to do! Down with Breast Cancer!!
http://www.the3day.org/Boston06/alliege e
I never even wrote about out new apartment! On August 1, we will be moving to Prospect Heights! On July 1, we found a beautiful 3-bedroom apartment that is WALKING DISTANCE from the Museum! It is really amazing. The details of the place are stunning -- pretty tiles and light fixtures, new appliances, really nice details and beautifully painted walls... Everything is clean and fresh and bright! Jessica is going to be our third roommate. She and her cats, Frog and Toad, will be moving in late August. I am so excited for this move!
Another benefit of the move is that we are ALL going to be saving money. We have distributed the rent unevenly to reflect the differing sizes of the bedrooms. Susan has the Susan-Master-Suite, I have the Room-With-The-Nook, and Jessica has the Small-Five-Sided-Room. All of us will be paying less rent than our previous places, including Susan!
I have been trying to clean, pack, orgainze, and streamline my current apartment, so that Susan and I don't move with anything "unneccesary." We have both donated a lot of clothes to the Donation Bin! I have this desire to make my space look simple and less cluttered, and truly "adult." (It's hard when you have a Pez collection.) But, I am going to neatly pack away my Pez dispensers and other toys in favor of a more uncluttered, tasteful style. At least, that is my vision. :-) My room has a "nook" -- essentially, it is shaped like this:
*******************************
* (nook)*
* *
* *******
* *
* *
* *
* *
* *
*************************
The Nook is too small to have a piece of furniture in, except for maybe a chair... At the end of it is a window, so it gets light... So,I want to put something really interesting there... I continually heckle Susan with ideas: "Maybe I could hang a mobile in my Nook." "Maybe I could put my fish tank in my Nook." "Maybe Andrew could help me find some Tiny Furniture for my Nook." (Andrew's really talented with finding Tiny Furniture.)
Italian Ice Project Update:
9.) Vanilla Fudge Brownie
Either way, there are lots of things to look forward to. My Georgia trip (tonight!), the move (July 29-30, we hope!), the WALKATHON (Aug. 4-5-6)... Yeah!!!!!

Thank-you thank-you thank-you thank-you to all those who have helped
me not only meet, but EXCEED, my fund-raising minimum. I am not that
fond of fund-raising, and was the most apprehensive about this element
of the 3-day experience, but through your unconditional generosity,
you made me successful! I am so grateful and pleased, from the bottom
of my heart. As of this afternoon, in fact, I've raised 2,473.00!!
WOW. When I am in mile 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 .... I will be thinking
of you, and all those who your donations were in honor/memory of.
Thank you.

Wow, we are so close to hitting our fundraising goal, we can TASTE IT! We are getting very excited about meeting and exceeding our goal. Our training has been going well, and we are certain it will be even better once Susan's school year finishes up. The miles we are walking on the weekends has certainly increased! It is intense, but we are having fun!
Check out this cool video! it is a really neat way we can show you exactly what we're doing and what the 3-Day is really going to be like!

New Sneakers!The 3-Day Internet resources have been truly amazing and helpful! We followed the suggestions on the web and both of us purchased the OFFICIAL SNEAKER of the event: The New Balance 843! We are starting to break them in so they will be ready for the event. You might be wondering what we used to train in... we both had athletic sneakers (our friends call them "space shoes"...haha). We are going to bring BOTH the old and new pairs of shoes to the 3-Day with us, so that we have a change of shoe available in case of rain or another problem.

Men with Breast Cancer??
Did you know that men can get breast cancer, too? Breast cancer is generally thought of as a disease that only affects women. However, about 1-2% of people diagnosed with breast cancer are men. Signs and symptoms of breast cancer present themselves in the same way in men as they do in women--as a lump in the breast tissue. Because men are not taught to regularly examine their chests, when the cancer is detected, it is often more advanced. Therefore, gentlemen, you should get used to regularly inspecting your chest area for any abnormalities or lumps. (A good time to do this is when in the shower.) Below is a link to a website with more information about breast cancer and men's health:

To my dear friends and family members,
THANK YOU for your genreousity! As of April 8, I have made it to my $2,200 goal and BEYOND! I am extremely proud of this accomplishment, and I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me reach my goal, and for helping to fight breast cancer!
I am excited to go above and beyond my goal, however, I want to make sure Susan reaches her goal first. If you have not yet contributed, please consider donating to Susan FIRST so that we can be sure she makes it to $2,200! Each walker is required to raise a minimum of $2,200, so if one of us doesn't make it to the minimum (even though our team total might be over $4,400), the difference must be paid out-of-pocket by the walker! So, I urge you to help Susan reach $2,200! Any donations to either of us help the Pink Flamingoes team fight breast cancer!
Thank you SO much!
All my love and thanks,
Allison

About our Benefactors
You may be wondering: where does all the money we are raising go? What are the funds we raise doing exactly? This is an important question, and it is obviously one of the main reasons we decided to participate in this event.
85% of the proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, which is an organizarion with a fourfold mission: research, education, screening, and treatment. 15% of the proceeds benefit the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund which focuses on research, treatment, prevention, and education. These organizations are leaders in breast cancer research, which is one of the most important reasons we are participating in this event--to make great advances in the fight against breast cancer today and for the future!

OR! Even simpler, you can send checks or cash to our home address, and we will see to it that your donations make it to the correct place. E-mail us for our mailing address if you need it!

Front Porch Greetings to Donate Profits to The Pink Flamingoes Team!Front Porch Greetings is a greeting card company started by Susan and her mom, Sally Crandall. Sally came up with an idea to help us reach our fundraising goal: For every card purchased from now through July, Front Porch Greetings will donate $2 to our team ($12 will be donated to our team for every 6-card package). We urge you to take advantage of this deal--you will not only be supporting our team, but you will be purchasing beautiful, high-quality, hand-made greeting cards, featuring photography by the very talented Crandall family. So, as you know, I am participating in the Boston Breast Cancer 3-Day, which is a 3-day, 60-mile walkathon to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Susan and I have formed THE PINK FLAMINGOES team (homage to the almost-stolen pink plastic lawn flamingoes that we know and love). We are brainstorming some new fundraisers... stay tuned for more about that! Last night, we kicked off our training with a BANG. I wanted to log all of the things that we see as we are walking. I think I am mostly going to write this down on paper. However, last night I forgot to do that, so I will write it here.
Things we saw: A dead rat (I almost stepped on it). A dead bird (Susan almost stepped on it). An abandoned coffeepot on the curb.
Miles walked: 3.
Make a donation, or share these links with EVERYONE you know! THANK YOU!

Susan (
susanbean) and I have decided to do the Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60-mile 3-day walk in Boston. This is going to be intense, because we are starting now to train for the walk in August. Also, we are each required to raise $2,200. I am determined to do this!
I know it will be challenging, but I also know it will be nothing compared to what my Mom is currently going through.
I have never done anything quite like this before, but I am really excited by the challenge, both physically and mentally! I am excited to begin training with Susan, and to begin fundraising! This is a link to my personal page where you can make a donation, if you would like to do so. I truly and wholeheartedly appreciate your support!
Also, I need all the help I can get, so please feel free to re-post this or email this link to anyone you think might be interested in donating! Here is the link:
