25 things about me.

  • Jan. 29th, 2009 at 4:49 PM
Sushi
This is a Facebook thing that's been going around, so I decided to post it to my LJ as well. :)

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you. If I tagged you, it's because I want to know more about you.

(To do this, go to “notes” under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people (in the right hand corner of the app) then click publish.)

1.) There are very, very, very few people I "hate." I can usually see the good in everybody. I like most people. In order for me to truly "hate" someone, they'd probably have to do something to hurt one of my loved ones.

2.) I think about sea creatures A LOT. Maybe I was supposed to be a Marine Biologist in another life.

3.) Since starting graduate school, there's something missing in my life. That something is READING FOR PLEASURE. It is absolutely killing my soul that I have to read boring articles all the time instead of actually reading good books!

4.) Speaking of books, I am a book snob. It is maybe the one thing I am a snob about. I despise "chick lit" and will think a little bit less of you if you actually enjoy it. My mom argues that there is a place for "chick lit," such as when you are on the beach. I think you can read a good book on the beach just as easily as you can read a crappy book.

5.) I don't really like talking on the telephone.

6.) I would MUCH RATHER be hot than cold. Cold weather is just super uncomfortable and unpleasant to me. I hate wearing winter clothes, too!

7.) Sometimes I think I'm in a music rut. I love music, but don't really know where to begin finding new stuff. Most of what I listen to is old music. That's why I love getting mix CDs from people!

8.) Eating out is one of my favorite activities, but it is probably the biggest problem I have with regard to spending too much money and gaining too much weight!

9.) I get into these "phases" where I only watch certain things on DVD. Sometimes, it is a TV show, like "Gilligan's Island" or "Lois & Clark." Sometimes it's Marilyn Monroe Movies. Currently, it is Elvis movies.

10.) I wish I had more time to do all of the artwork I want to do (and craft projects).

11.) My favorite flower is plain white daisies with yellow centers. I think they are the happiest flowers ever! I love having flowers in the house at all times (even though it is frivolous in these bad economic times).

12.) One of my favorite smells in the world is men's deodorant.

13.) I like to do things in a most efficient way. However, sometimes I waste a lot of time thinking about how best to be efficient.

14.) My favorite thing in the world to do is to give gifts. Especially homemade ones. I love to spoil my loved ones! I can't wait to have more time and money to do more of this.

15.) I believe when I am finally a teacher, my financial problems will be over.

16.) I have trouble planning long term things. I more of a "one day at a time" kinda girl.

17.) I still miss my dog Madison so much it hurts. She died in 2005.

18.) I want to take more dance classes as soon as I have time (ballet and tap). Although it is probably unrealistic for someone who's a 28-year-old beginner, I always wanted go en pointe. (I am a little girl who still wants to be a ballerina at heart!)

19.) I never had a video game until I got my Nintendo DS. I love it! I also love playing more "interactive" video games, like the Wii and Rock Band. I would like to get a Wii someday.

20.) I have the most amazing family in the world! My parents are incredible, and I love that my extended family is so close.

21.) I love eating pancakes for dinner.

22.) Finishing "logic" problems, sudokus, and crosswords make me feel smart!

23.) I never felt like I was missing out by being an only child. That's all thanks to my very closest, dearest friends and my cousins. :)

24.) I am a pack rat, and I hate throwing things away. However, the amount of clutter I have bothers me, too.

25.) I've tried to live my life in such a way that I don't have any regrets.

DAY 2 (yesterday, December 12, 2008):

1.) It was Donut Friday at work!!! A colleague brought Munchkins and a box of coffee!

2.) Then, at 4:30, it was time to make crafts at work (NO JOKE!). We all met in the kitchenette and made paper snowflakes and other crafts out of old business cards and scrap paper! AND we had popcorn and champagne!

3.) I GOT TO CLEAN MY PLACE. My room has been a big huge mess, and I cleaned a lot!

4.) McNugget is now totally back to his old self, swimming freely, energetic, happy, and hungry! SOOO HAPPY about that!!!!! Seriously -- I am SO SO SO glad he is making a full recovery!

5.) A visit from Marty, hooray! We watched most of "Gremlins," which I had not seen in AGES!

I was tagged by [info]sallycandance , so here we go!!! Also, I think I am going to post my happy things about the previous day, since I will definitely forget to post at the end of the day after all the good things have happened. Today's post is a little long because I haven't updated in a while...</lj>

* * * * *

The rules are that for 8 days you have to post something that made you happy that day. Tag 8 people to do the same.

DAY ONE (yesterday, December 11, 2008):

1.) I thought my beloved dwarf pufferfish McNugget was going to die. I've been putting McNugget's heater on for a few hours while I am monitoring him and in the room with him, to regulate the temperature. However, because the tank is small (only 5 gallons), it could easily overheat. Well, yesterday morning before going in to teach, I saw that I had accidentally left McNugget's heater on ALL NIGHT and had completely overheated the aquarium. McNugget was looking very lifeless. I immediately took him out of the tank, put him in cooler water, and tried to revive him. I could see his gills were moving, and his tail was sometimes moving, but that was all. I was SO UPSET. I did a 50% water change and added cool water to even out the temperature, and then put McNugget back in the tank. Then I had to go to school to teach. I worried about McNugget all day. He really looked dead (except for his gills moving). On Thursdays, I usually go straight from teaching to my new temp job at the Museum, but I decided to go home first to check on McNugget. Lo and behold, he had swam up to his plant and was chilling there. I shook the plant and he began to swim agound. I think he is going to make it! I was so happy, I was almost crying! I am hoping he will make a full recovery. He seems to be a little exhausted and less self-motivated to swim around (he does a lot of hanging out in his plant since it happened). But, that was a pretty traumatic experience, so I hope he will come around soon.

2.) Linda, my professor, came to observe me teaching in my classroom. The lesson went really well, and Linda had great things to say about my teaching. She said I was very intuitive, and had great instincts to go over to the students that needed help the most. She thought that some of the explanations I made to the kids were really good (demonstrating on the fly what is meant by a 3/4 profile, for example; not assuming the students know what that is). She said I am going to be a "wonderful art teacher," and when my mentor teacher Desiree was there, she added how I am going to build an amazing program wherever I go! It was awesome to get all of those great and supportive compliments! ALSO exciting is the fact that Linda has a school in mind for me that needs a really strong art teacher. It's an elementary school near Brooklyn College. Something to think about!! Linda comments, "They will hire whoever I send them." Linda is one of my best advocates at finding a job, so I am extremely excited that she is already thinking of places that would be a good fit for me. She has a lot of contacts and is such a great resource, and it is awesome how supportive she is of me!

3.) I got a manicure and pedicure which was long overdue and I think I just needed to do something relaxing and pampering for myself (especially after the stress of worrying over McNugget)! I got a festive purple color!

4.) I went to see Marty play at a Toys for Tots benefit in Bayonne last night! It was really fun, despite the nasty weather! I brought four toys I'd gotten at Target -- a Barbie, a baby doll, a Transformer (Robots in Disguise!), and a Mr. Potato Head! So, while I am sad I will not be able to afford Operation Santa Claus this year, I definitely feel better that I was able to contribute some toys to needy children! Marty did a great job and it was fun seeing him play solo since he hasn't really done that in a while! We got a little drenched, but it was cool. It made me feel very festive, and I am looking forward to Marty's BIG holiday event, Glen Burtnik's Xmas Xtravaganza. Marty will be playing with Spiraling, and also in the house band!

OK, I am tagging....

Check this out! It's a puzzle/game thing where you identify a movie based on seeing one letter from its poster. Try it out -- it is a pretty good challenge. I only got 10 of them (out of a possible 46)! Doris, you will be good at this one, I think! You know every movie!

GOOD LUCK! Let me know how you do! :)

Comment and I'll give you a letter; then you have to list ten things you love that begin with that letter. Afterward, post this in your journal and give out some letters of your own.

[info]vertical_chaos gave me the letter G! Here goes...

1.) Gilligan's Island
Gilligan's Island is one of my Favorite Television Programs Of All Time. I can remember watching it when I was 2 or 3 years old. It is an interest that has somehow managed to carry throughout my lifespan, since I enjoyed it as a baby, then throughout elementary school, middle school, and high school... trough to the present! In the days before DVDs, I would rush home to watch the reruns on TNT, and I would record them on the VCR. I would be very upset if I would miss one!

2.) Gracie
Gracie is my family dog, and she resides in New Jersey with my parents. She is an 80-pound golden retriever (not fat, just a BIG DOG). She thinks, however, that she is much smaller. She is good at tricks, including "sit up and beg," a trick mostly mastered by SMALLER dogs. Gracie enjoys seasonal fruits and vegetables, including melon of f the rind and corn on the cob. Her birthday is December 20, and she is 2 1/2 years old. She is quite a riot! Although i was not living with my parents' house when we got her, I went with my dad and picked her out! Gracie is nicknamed "The G" which makes her perfect for this list!

3.) Golden Retrievers
Kind of redundant after the above, but I added "Golden Retrievers" as a way of also including the Greatest Dog Of All Time, Madison. Madison was our family dog before Gracie, and she was our first golden. She was a dainty 50-55 pounds and had reddish hair. Her personality was very different from Gracie's -- Madison was very "regal" (Doris and I nicknamed her "The Baroness") and was upset if she was "seen" doing something embarrassing. She loved everyone, but was stingy with kisses, which were reserved only for her nearest and dearest. Bathtime for Madison was my job, a job I cherished because Madison loved nothing more than to be dried with a towel at the end.

4.) Georgia
Some of you may know that I have a LOT of family in Georgia! Many of the Georgia family members migrated south from New Jersey. My Grandma lives there, as well as many of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. In fact, there are only a few relatives that don't live there! I love to visit Georgia to see everyone. Georgia is a big state and it has a lot of different things I like, including: cities, beaches, lakes, and mountains!

5.) Gmail
Okay, maybe it is kind of lame to have Gmail as one of my favorite things. HOWEVER, I have tried a lot of different emails over the years, and Gmail has revolutionized the way I send and receive email. I just love it. They way it keeps conversations "together," the G-Chat, the archive, everything. Gmail is the best email system ever, and I am never switching!

6.) Grandparents
Who doesn't love their grandparents?! I do! Unfortunately, I only have one grandparent left, my Grandma (dad's mom - residing in GEORGIA!). When I was 3, my Pop Pop (mom's dad) passed away, and we moved into the house with Grams (mom's mom). She passed away when I was 9, but I was really lucky to have such a close relationship with her! My Grandpa (dad's dad) and I had a very special relationship, too! I think I was about 15 when he died. I am the first female grandchild on both sides, so I am a BIG DEAL to my grandparents! And they are a BIG DEAL to me!

7.) Gelatin
Don't make fun -- I really love Jell-O. In Middle School , my friends and I became OBSESSED with it (Doris, is there any way to explain it?). We spent a lot of time writing about it, drawing about it, singing about it, thinking about it, and of course -- eating it. We used to have parties called "Food Fests" which almost always featured an elaborate Jell-O mold. Still, to this day, I really enjoy making a Jell-O dessert now and again!!

8.) Ginger
My interest in ginger is threefold:
a.) Ginger, Pickled
Pickled Ginger is served with sushi, which is one of my Favorite Foods In The World. I used to not like it because I thought it tasted like soap (which it kind of does). However, I realized how well it goes with sushi. It cleanses your palate in between bites so you can appreciate all of the sushi's flavor. YUM -- it is really good!

b.) Ginger, Aroma/Spice
I like ginger candles and ginger soap and ginger lotions! I also like foods that have ginger in them, like ginger bread and other baked goods.

c.) Ginger Grant
While I love every character, Ginger Grant, the "movie star," is my favorite character on "Gilligan's Island." She has been my fave since childhood. She is a Marilyn-Monroe-ish character, which is probably why I like her!

9.) Giving
Easily my favorite thing on this list is "giving." I guess this could be broken down into two sub-categories ("giving gifts" and "giving of my time") which are often the same thing! I love giving gifts to my loved ones... Christmas is my favorite time of year and I love choosing presents for people! I love the feeling of finding the perfect gift for someone, or of really REALLY surprising them! I love the feeling I get when I've got the gift and I have to wait and anticipate what it's going to be like when they open the gift for the first time!! Giving gifts seriously trumps getting gifts (although I love that too!). I also love giving of my time (ie, volunteering!). Sometimes this includes giving gifts, such as what I do for Soldiers' Angels, and what I did last year for Operation Santa Claus! I love giving!!

10.) Glasses
Okay, you know I have struggled with this for a while, but I really do like wearing glasses. I am now allowed to wear contacts again, but I am wearing them more sparingly because I do not want to dry out my eyes. I have learned that if I alternate glasses-wearing with contacts-wearing, my eyes feel really good and healthy (plus I can see)! Hooray for glasses! Having glasses and contacts has made me so appreciative for eyesight in general!

Hippo Ballerina: tee hee
For [info]igraine120:

Save the Manatee Club:I have been a member of SMC since middle school! I first learned about manatees (and fell in love with them) after reading an article in the children's magazine, Ranger Rick. A lifetime fan of hippopotami, I found manatees to be sort-of like the oceanic version of the hippopotamus. They have that same sweet, fat, blubbery appearance I so enjoy! Unlike hippos which have a violent streak, manatees are truly "gentle giants." I have been concerned about manatees, which have been endangered for many years. That's why I got involved in SMC. SMC has a lovely "Adopt a Manatee" program that I can't say enough good things about. Newsletters ensure me that my contribution s being well-spent to protect manatees. My adopted manatee is named Lorelei. In the past I have adopted Elaine and Ginger.

Vicks Vaporub: I used to be utterly addicted to Vicks Vaporub -- possibly TOO addicted! I used to use it every night, just putting a mustache of it under my nose! It just makes you breathe really well! Ah! It is just the best! My mom used to do this too. I think a few of my friends were concerned about my addiction to Vicks. The packaging even says you aren't supposed to really put it around your nose. So I decided to cut back. Now I only use Vicks when I am sick. :)

For [info]pgwfolc:

CVS: Funny you should ask about this; I just went to CVS today! I love shopping at drug stores in general: Rite Aid, Duane Reade, etc. But CVS is my fave! Doris and I often include a trip to CVS in our activities whenever we hang out. They have so many things I need, plus other favorite impulse buys like seasonal items, cards/stationery, makeup, etc.

Mr. T.: My love and infatuation with T began in college. When I was a Communications Design major, there was an assignment where all of my classmates and I were given a letter of the alphabet. We had to research the history of the letter and present it graphically in a poster design. I was given W and my friend Stacey was given T. The first draft of my project featured WONDER WOMAN as the emblem for "W" and Stacey's had Mr. T! Well, when we turned in our drafts, the professors shot them down. We changed out posters, but Stacey and I continued to use Mr. T as a symbol for our discontent with things in general. Stacey used to make posters using her old draft and put them around the dorm, saying things like, "I pity the fool who don't recycle!" Anyway, T eventually became my "office mascot" at the Museum. I have a T mousepad and coaster, and a Mr. T talking keychain. I also read Mr. T's autobiography. If you click on the "Mr. T" tag you can read my BOOK REPORT about this fine piece of literature!

Subversive Cross-Stitch: There is a book entitled "Subversive Cross-Stitch," and Susan got it for one one day. It features patterns for sweet little adorable cross stitch needlepoints, with sarcastic sayings like "Rat Bastard," "Go Away," and "Bee-yotch." :) I have made a few of them!! I hope to make more! I think they're hilarious!

Manatees: I list them three times because I adore them! Firstly, above you can see my explanation of the SMC. Then I list "sea cows" in addition to manatees because I love that term for them! :) I use different terms in my interests sometimes to help people who are looking to find similarly-interested friends.

Mae West: When I'm Good
Comment on this post and I will choose seven interests from your profile and ask you to explain what they mean and why you are interested in them. Post this along with your answers in your own journal so that others can play along.
The things [info]vertical_chaosgave me...

beans: Hm. I forgot I had "beans" as an interest! I mean, beans are all very yummy, but I believe the true meaning of me putting them down as an interest is because I use "bean" as a term of endearment for [info]susanbean (susanBEAN) and for a while it was used for some others, but now it's almost exclusively Susan. "Beans" refer to "human beans" and also to a fabricated/shared sisterhood Susan and I made up years ago. So many people used to see us together and think that we were sisters or twins. For a while it amused us and we'd sometimes opt to lie and tell them we were indeed sisters. In the fabricated story, Susan was nicknamed "Bean" one Easter when I gave her all the gross black jellybeans to eat so I could have the good ones, and Susan became ill from TooMuchBlackJellybeans. We never actually told anyone this, but I remember making it up, and the name stuck!

etsy: One of my FAVORITE WEBSITES. I check Etsy daily, just to browse. It's a website for crafters and artisans of ALL SORTS to buy and sell their own homemade goodies. I adore the entire principal of it! I only have one item in my shop, Beangarden, right now. I hope to get it up and running one day, after I graduate perhaps! Right now there is just too much on my plate! Still, I love BUYING on Etsy even more than I love selling!! My favorite shop, as you all know, is Cleo Dee's (home of All Things Squid-Related).

leonia: Leonia, NJ is my hometown. I am actually in Leonia RIGHT NOW! Located in Bergen County, which is in northern NJ, Leonia is only one-square-mile in size. Despite being exceedingly small, Leonia has three public schools, and it is a very nice suburban town. It's not difficult to commute to NYC from Leonia, so a lot of people are commuters. I am a 3rd-generation Leonian, with two of my great-grandfathers being mayors of the town at one time or another!

some like it hot: My FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME. Some Like it Hot has everything I like in a movie, including (but not limited to): Marilyn Monroe, men dressing in drag, musical numbers, 1920s costumes and settings, a ukulele, a bull fiddle, gangsters, a chase scene, romance, action, and cases of confused identity. It is the perfect comedy, blending low-brown humor with subtle spoken humor, physical humor, slapstick, situation comedy... you name it! It's a timeless film.

v day: V-Day is an organization close to my heart. Committed to preventing violence against women everywhere, V-Day can take many forms. It can be a month-long festival, or a week, or even a single day. Usually it happens in February, close to Valentine's Day. The V-Day I participated in was the first-ever "V-Day Syracuse" at Syracuse University. Our first V-Day was a week long, with lots of events and activities. The main event of V-Day is a production of the Vagina Monologues by Even Ensler. I was in the first production of the Vagina Monologues at S.U. It was an awesome experience! I am proud to say V-Day is still going strong up at Syracuse, raising money and awareness!

ultra lounge music: Ultra Lounge is a series of CDs that I have been collecting. Featuring "lounge" music of the 50s and surrounding decades, these compilation albums have fantastic artwork and swingin' tracks! I love playing these tunes during dinner parties (they are smooth, suave-sounding tunes). I've got a bunch of these, but my favorites are their "sampler" CDs which have special novelty covers (one features a working Roulette Wheel!) and they contain highlights from the other CDs. I recommend these CDs left and right -- they are really a lot of fun! Organized by theme, some are "tropical," one is "bossa nova," one is for "bachelor pads," some have to do with "TV themes," there are some great Christmas ones... Hooray for Ultra Lounge!

circus peanuts: Ah, yes, circus peanuts. My peers (*cough*[info]zama60*cough*) are constantly making fun of me for (allegedly) being the Only Human Being Alive who enjoys these delectable treats!! Are you familiar with them? They look like this:

They are not REAL peanuts, but rather, they are spongy, sugary, dense-yet-marshmallow-like, banana-flavored, peanut-shaped treats! Their signature color is orange. Oh, how I love them! I think they are the kind of candy that could outlast a nuclear holocost. I'm not sure if they contain any natural substances (excepting sugar). They have a bit of a reputation being an "old person's candy." I think I like them because my Grams used to eat them with me! :)

** You can comment and I'll ask about 7 of your interests, or you can just ask me about any of my interests if you want!**

The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed. Well let's see.

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.
4) Reprint this list in your own LJ so we can try and track down these people who've read 6 and force books upon them ;-)

I passed! :)

When you're finished, post this little paragraph on your blog and be surprised (or mortified) about what people remember about you.
